This week the focus is on communication and language. The Textbook (Ch.4) indicates that a significant amount of human communication is nonverbal, and identified various forms of nonverbal communication. Further, even when we do communicate verbally we use nonverbal methods to provide additional information.
For this weeks’ post I want you to think about the kinds of information you would normally project or express through nonverbal communication during a face to face interaction. How important is the nonverbal part, and are we aware of how much it adds? How do smartphones change the way that we communicate, and can they be positive changes?
In your initial post you need to:
list at least 4 nonverbal cues you might frequently use in a face to face interaction and identify the type of nonverbal communication used for each cue (for ex. Haptic, chronometric, proxemic…). Then explain what information you would be expressing with each of those cues.
Answer the following question: Do you think that online communication or use of Smartphones has made it more difficult because the nonverbal cues are not available? Then explain why and how you think that online communication is made/or not made more difficult by the absence of nonverbal cues. Have you experienced any communication problems during the Covid pandemic as a result of mask usage?
