this course covers conceptual and research-based understandings of juvenile justice in the United States. Discussion boards will, generally, be opportunities for you to explore the conceptual definitions or implications of what we are looking at in the course and are generally prompt-based discussions. This means there are specific questions I am asking you to answer based on your knowledge of the readings and other course materials.
Each discussion board assignment has two parts: original work posted by the student and thoughtful replies to the discussion topics posted by other students. These assignments are less about answering directly with information found on page 156 (or whichever) of a textbook, and more about taking the abstract concepts in the reading and applying them to real-world scenarios.
You must fully answer both questions in no fewer than 300 words.

Topic 3 Concepts Prompts:
1. Evaluate changes to the legality of the death penalty for juveniles as it has changed over time. Use between three and six US Supreme Court cases to illustrate these substantive changes. Ensure you are explaining the major holding(s) of the cases you select as you write.
As you reply to colleagues, consider a few factors that may influencing the public perceptions of the death penalty (in general and specifically for juveniles). How might these influence future legislation?
2. Use of discretion in encounters remains one of the most individualized elements of juvenile policing with officers exercising large amounts of agency. Consider if you were to be assigned, in the course of your employment, to generate the police or other agency departmental guide/handbook for the use of discretion with Juveniles. Identify and explain between three and six substantive policies or policy recommendations you would suggest for the new departmental guide.
As you reply to colleagues, consider what they included versus what you excluded. What might a more comprehensive document look like if you were to combine your own and their ideas?
