Instruction: This week’s readings offer similar and differing perspectives about race and racism. This week’s write-up must summarize the key arguments presented across Marable, Smedley & Smedley, Khendi, and the video Race: The Power of an Illusion.
Also, consider in your write-up the question: What do you see as the relationship between racial representations and racism?
Your response should also use at least two APA formatted direct quotes from this week’s readings. Full credit will be given to essays that account for the entire prompt.
my definition of racism(discussion): Race is the modern concept and it is the main form of social differentiation in American society, and it is the highest priority over differences in social class, education, gender, and so on. Taking primordialism as an example, Smedley (2012) claims that race and racism are natural components of the human mind and that it is human nature for people to fear themselves and others. As such, racism is typically formed based on the idea that one’s group is superior to another, and the differences between groups and hatred toward them are generally accompanied by the doctrine of racism and can be the most appropriate interpretation of racism.
Also, Marable (2003) explains racism by quoting Thomas Jefferson. The key difficulty in rooting out racism in American transplants is that racism precedes national identity. In any society, the racial distinction is not just a fact, but a complex condition, deep in context, and is located in a specific set of social relationships. It argues that it is the product of a structure that constitutes a regular pattern of social, economic, and political understanding and behavior according to these differences, the belief that differences in relationships are important as well as the skin color.
