Euthanasia of lost or abandoned pets in Australia – How to tackle this issue using civic engagement? There are several tools and methods I am going to use to achieve my aim of causing my local council to be transparent with their lost or abandoned animal policies. The first and most crucial tool is for me to gather community support and awareness around the issue so that when I’m trying to affect change, it’s not just one person, but a larger group involved. I would partner with or join an established animal advocacy group. This way I can connect with their already established community and network strategically within their resources. Secondly, I would want to gain support from the local council community who are the primary stakeholders affected by the lack of transparency around lost or abandoned dog policies. Thirdly, I would consult with the area Aboriginal group, The Karuna Peoples to make sure they are involved as an important stakeholder. To do this I would set up several crucial activities to raise support and awareness Create a website and social media sites with the aim and purpose of my cause, calling for supporters and volunteers. Add a petition to the website so that community support can be measured. Ask for guidance from the Kaurna Aboriginal elders in our tribal area. This guidance would be aimed at incorporating indigenous solutions to the issue of lost or abandoned animals. Using my contacts in already established animal activism groups and volunteers from website/social media sites, organize letterbox drops in the neighborhoods within the district council. Using my contacts in already established animal activism groups and volunteers from website/social media sites, have petition signing stations around neighborhoods within the district council i.e., malls, supermarkets Alert media about the cause. Aim to be featured in the local newspaper to raise support. The next step now that I have an animal activist group onboard and lots of local community support and interest is to target influential support. This would be our local radio and television personalities and our district MP. Support from these types of influencers is crucial for expanding and strengthening our community network, while also going a long way to ensuring the success of civic engagement. Then we would be ready to take the petition to Council Meeting asking them to review their lost and abandoned animals’ procedures and policies. I could offer a solution/replacement policy, and also present the Kaurna Aboriginal solutions for consideration. If we don’t make any headway, the next step would be to organize a protest rally at the council offices. I feel this is the best approach for my cause because of its logical and measured approach. I think by actively seeking community engagement and support we are more likely to succeed than if I just joined an animal welfare group with a larger agenda. This would help me avoid one of the potential weaknesses of this plan, which is being seen as only animal rights activists, instead of as community civic engagement for change. https://petwelfare.org.au/2016/11/02/success-follows-change-charmhaven/
